Digital Audio Radio: Two perspectives We present two views
of present-day DAR progress. The first, by Ralph Justus of the Consumer Electronics
Manufacturers Association, who is critical of existing DAR transmission systems and
advocates against using In Band, On Channel allocations-because the consumer will demand
much higher aural quality from a digital system.
The second perspective is an article from BROADCASTING & CABLE magazine, in which the
author talks to industry participants---and makes the case that DAR stations could be on
the air in three years.(971223)
Establishing an RDS Network for National Public Radio by Scott Wright, Delco Electronics. "NPR is NPR with a loyal group of listeners who can benefit from the ability of automatically finding a NPR station wherever they may go. With little coordination and minimal investment, NPR and its listeners can benefit from RDS, as many NPR members are already doing so." This paper, submitted to EUonline, describes briefly RDS features and how such a system could be established at your station. We also solicit your comments to Scott's paper in a handy feed back form. Radio Broadcasters and Internet Audio: A Match Made in Heaven Or a Shotgun Wedding? By Steve Church, President, Telos Systems of Cleveland, Ohio. Presented at the 1996 NAB Broadcast Engineering Conference, this paper "offers an overview of where the technology is today, along with some discussion and predictions for what might be coming. It also has a description of systems which may be used for netcasting today. Consideration will be given to some important limitations of the Internet which would impact broadcast-like audio projects, and possible solutions." (960901)
