Why can't I have wind noise in my story? It was windy when I was out there! Isn't that part of the story?

There's a difference between wind sound and wind noise. Wind sound is a recording that evokes wind in a listener's mind. It's one of the most elusive types of ambiant recordings.

Wind noise, on the other hand, doesn't elicit an image of wind when the average listener hears it. All that listener hears is a disruptive noise, which interferes with the intelligibility or the aesthetic quality of the sound.
