WATS
Wide Area Telephone Service A long distance telephone service where the called party pays the charges available from AT&T, MCI and Sprint among others.
White Line
A transmission facility shared by all radio networks to feed pool audio and unilateral reports from a very remote location. Generally used for the coverage of the President when he leaves the country. Pool audio has the highest priority, unilateral reports are fed on a first-come-first-served basis.

There is usually a backfeed associated with this type of service that allows any of the member organizations to speak back to the remote location.

Administration of the White Line is determined by the assignment of the TV Pool; CBS TV/CBS Radio, ABC TV/ABC Radio, NBC TV/Westwood and CNN/NPR. AP, UPI and Standard do not have the resources to pull off this kind of an effort, and VOA can't do it due to political reasons.

The material is comprised mostly of Newspots and other short format pieces. Their big advantage at the moment is that they have an operating Uplink in Bagdhad.
